For 28 years, Denise Herzing has spent five months each summer living with a pod of Atlantic spotted dolphins, following three generations of family relationships and behaviors. It's clear they are communicating with one another -- but is it language? Could humans use it too? She shares a fascinating new experiment to test this idea.

How does the War on Terror end?: Chris Fuller at TEDxSWPS - YouTube

How does the War on Terror end?: Chris Fuller at TEDxSWPS - YouTube: ""

'via Blog this'
Christopher Fuller is an historian at the University of Southampton, currently researching the United States' use of unmanned 'drones' in their conflict with al-Qaeda, tracking this technology and policy back to its origins in the 1980s. Since September 11, 2001, the West has been engaged in a "war on terror", using lethal military force to counter the threat of non-state terrorism posed by groups such as al-Qaeda and their affiliates. But what does the future of this conflict look like? Are we resigned to a lifetime of perpetual conflict overseas and strict security at home, or is there an achievable end point? This talk contemplates how the "war on terror" ends, and how the post-9/11 world returns to normality.

Our world is changing at a rapid and dramatic pace. Every decade brings technological advances and unforeseen social change. So how can we prepare our children for a world we can't envision? The best way to do that is to educate our children to develop three essential capacities: a capacity for vibrant and vigorous activity, a capacity for a sensitive and yet resilient emotional life, and a capacity for clear, focused, original, thinking.

In order to develop these three capacities, we must educate our children in a multidimensional way in school. The place to begin is through self-directed play with the young child. Play is the wonderfully creative work of early childhood. When young children play, they are focused, attentive, and completely involved in what they are doing. This is a characteristic of genius and innovative individuals often keep this playful nature intact throughout their lives.

The second way to educate children for the future is through art. In the grade school it is possible to teach all of the academic subjects in a manner that integrates art. In doing so we create an educational program that addresses a child's need to be engaged imaginatively and emotionally in each lesson.

When we teach children through a foundation of active play and a solid framework of artistic experiences, we help them develop the third essential ability, a capacity for dynamic, curious, and original thinking, a thinking that enables our children to ask the questions that are still waiting to be asked.

No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top have created a standards driven educational system that only asks our children to use half of their human intelligence, just the left side of their brains. And sadly, fifty percent is a failing grade by any standard. Our children deserve more, much more.

‪Is Math a Feature of the Universe or a Feature of Human Creation? | Idea Channel | PBS‬‏ - YouTube: ""

'via Blog this'Math is invisible. Unlike physics, chemistry, and biology we can't see it, smell it, or even directly observe it in the universe. And so that has made a lot of really smart people ask, does it actually even EXIST?!?! Similar to the tree falling in the forest, there are people who believe that if no person existed to count, math wouldn't be around . .at ALL!!!! But is this true? Do we live in a mathless universe? Or if math is a real entity that exists, are there formulas and mathematical concepts out there in the universe that are undiscovered? Or is it all fiction? Whew!! So many questions, so many theories... watch the episode and let us know what you think!

Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder can improve the lives of everyone affected, but the complex network of causes make it incredibly difficult to predict. At TEDxPeachtree, Ami Klin describes a new early detection method that uses eye-tracking technologies to gauge babies' social engagement skills and reliably measure their risk of developing autism. Ray Kurzweil — Singularitarian Immortalist, Director of Engineering at Google, famous inventor, author of How to Create a Mindhttp://GF2045.com/speakers/.

A world-class prolific inventor and leading futurist author, "the restless genius" (Wall Street Journal) points to 2045 for the technological singularity when A.I. will surpass human intelligence in his New York Times best seller The Singularity is Near, Amazon's #1 book in science and philosophy.

In this video Ray Kurzweil discusses his predictions about radical life extension, singularity, life expansion and the imminence of physical immortality. He invites participants to the second international Global Future 2045 congress (June 2013) http://www.GF2045.com.

"If we have radical life extension only, we would get profoundly bored, we'd have profound existential ennui, running out of things to do, and new ideas, but that's not what's going to happen. In addition to radical life extension, we're going to have radical life expansion, we're going to have millions of virtual environments to explore, we're going to literally expand our brains."

"We'll be routinely able to change our bodies very quickly, as well as our environments in virtual reality, but it will feel very real. We'll ultimately be able to do that with real reality too, like self-organizing swarms of nanobots that can link themselves up into a virtual body." says Ray Kurzweil.
